Blue Cheese Steak Recipe with Fried Onions - Lauren's Latest (1)

Did you guys have a great weekend? I sure did. I arrived Saturday afternoon to my sister’s place and we have been having a ball ever since. She has three kids and my little one has been in heaven! She has three new playmates that adore her not to mention an aunt and uncle that are over the moon! Last time we visited was at Christmas and she was so shy. Now, a few months later, she is talking, hugging, laughing and playing with them all! She’s like a new girl! I’ll be sure to post photos of all the fun we’ve been having!

Anyways, here’s another grilling recipe that you are sure to love! {Are you sick of these yet? Can’t get enough of that BBQ!} This is the second dinner idea I submitted to The Pioneer Woman’s Grilling Contest: Garlic Rubbed Steak with Blue Cheese and French Fried Onions. Don’t pass out. You’re not going to want to miss the details. In a nutshell, this New York Strip is given a good ol’ garlic rub down, sprinkled and massaged with oil, salt and pepper and then grilled to a perfect medium. Top the whole thing off with Blue Cheese and French Fried Onions and that my friends is what I called dinner two weeks ago.

Are you salivating yet? I am.

A few recipe notes for you to make this as close to perfect as possible:

-I used a NY Strip Steak, but feel free to use any cut of meat that is meant for grilling. Also, let the meat sit out at room temperature for 30 minutes or so to take the chill off. This will result in a more tender piece of meat.
-The longer you rub the steak with garlic, the more garlicky it will be. I love garlic and so does steak. Don’t hate! Appreciate.
-Be generous with the salt and the pepper. Sprinkle it on thick on BOTH sides after you oil it up.
-DO NOT forgo on the French Fried Onions. They add a delicious, unforgettable buttery crunch. And, don’t think you don’t know what I’m talking about. {The things you top your green bean casseroles with at Thanksgiving!} Deny it all you want- you know you love them!
-DO NOT forgo on the butter either. I am and will always be a butter lover/advocate/enthusiast.
-Once you take your steak off the grill cover that bad boy with foil and let it rest a good 10 minutes. It will make for a delicious and juicy steak. It will also help melt all the blue cheese. YUM.

I think that should be everything! If you guys only ever make one thing from my blog, please let this be it! Follow my few simple steps and you will be a steak/garlic/butter/french fried onion lover too. Happy Monday! 🙂

Prep Time 10 minutes mins

Cook Time 15 minutes mins

Total Time 25 minutes mins

Ingredients

  • 2 1 inch thick New York Strip Steaks
  • 1 clove garlic peeled
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • salt
  • pepper
  • 2 teaspoons butter
  • 4 tablespoons crumbled blue cheese about 2 oz.
  • 1/2 cup french fried onions

US Customary - Metric

Instructions

  • 1. Remove steaks from fridge and sit them out 30 minutes or so to take the chill off.

  • Preheat outdoor grill to high.

  • Cut garlic clove in half and rub both sides of steak with cut side of garlic. The longer you rub them, the stronger the flavor. Drizzle canola oil over steaks and spread evenly. Sprinkle both sides of meat generously with salt and pepper.

  • Place steak on hot grill and reduce heat to medium. Cover and grill 3-4 minutes and flip. {If you like a more well done steak, leave on the grill to cook 4-5 minutes before flipping.}

  • Cook steak another 2 minutes covered. Top each with 1 teaspoon butter. As butter starts to melt, spread it evenly over the top of the meat. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of blue cheese on top of each steak. Replace lid and cook another 1-2 minutes or until steak is cooked to your liking and cheese has started to melt.

  • Transfer steaks to serving platter and cover with foil to let meat rest.

  • After 5-10 minutes remove foil and top with french fried onions. Serve warm.
